Have you ever wanted to break free of your past programming—of the patterns or habits that hold you back?
I know I have. I imagine you have too.
But how do you do it? How do you Break Free? Where do you even start?
After all, most of the habits and patterns that undercut our success are deeply seated in the subconscious mind. That means we’re usually unaware we’re running them until the subconscious script has played out. And when we are aware of them, it can feel like watching a character in a B horror movie. You see them walking right into danger, but no matter how much you scream at them to stop…
Yeah, they keep right on going.
Now that’s not entirely fair. Once you’re aware you’re behaving from an old or unhealthy subconscious behavioral pattern, you can stop it!
Yes, You Can!
First, avoid the temptation to berate yourself when this happens because that won’t help. Mentally punishing yourself for unwanted patterns of behavior actually reinforces them.
Because it focuses on what you want to stop doing and has powerful emotions at the same time. That’s the recipe to tell your subconscious that something’s important. And that’s the opposite of what you want when you’re breaking an old pattern.
Instead, come up with something to stop your pattern, something totally unexpected. You might think of a ridiculous phrase that you’ll shout if you notice yourself acting in an old pattern. It helps to plan this in advance so you’re ready if you need it.
Let’s use the phrase, “Ooogly! Boogly! Presto! Mistro!” (Yes I know it’s totally ridiculous. That’s the point)
Now remember a situation you could have resolved better, one where you were reacting instead of responding and where your reaction was out of proportion.
Now remember exactly how that felt. Remember why you felt that way. Remember what you said and how you said it. Remember what you were doing with your body. Get it really clear in your mind. And now shout, “Ooogly! Boogly! Presto! Mistro!”
No, really, go ahead and shout it now! “Ooogly! Boogly! Presto! Mistro!”
Ok. If you’re at work, then shout it in your mind.
Now go ahead and remember the event again. Get it really clear in your mind again. Remember how you felt and why you felt that way. Remember what you said, how you said it, and what you were doing with your body. Get it really clear in your mind again…
Now shout, “Ooogly! Boogly! Presto! Mistro!”
Are you laughing? Do you feel different now?
Chances are you said yes. That’s because you just interrupted your old pattern of behavior.
You can use any phrase you want for this. Just make sure it’s ridiculous and totally unrelated to what you’re feeling when you use it. It helps to have a few different phrases in your mental tool kit too. So prepare a few right now—so you’re ready when you need them.
Now that you know this technique, I challenge you to use it! Go ahead and give it a try over the next 14 days and let me know how it works for you.
And always remember:
