The Power of What If

Share

What If is equally powerful and dangerous. What if?

A simple question; that’s equally powerful and destructive depending on its context.

It’s easy to think of the past and wonder…

What if I’d done this?

What if I’d done that?

How would things be different today?

The truth is you’ll never know what might have been. Doors from the past, divergent paths are closed.  Besides, wondering how your life would be today—if you’d acted differently in the past—is a good way to drive yourself mad.

But more importantly, habitually wondering “What if?” breeds depression.  It kills motivation. It’s like trying to run a 100 meter sprint through quicksand. When you’re stuck in, “What if?” you’re living in the past—punishing yourself for it.

What’s that accomplish?

Everyone can look back and find things they could do differently.

When you’re looking back you’ve got the knowledge of now with you. If reviewing a past situation reveals nothing you could have done differently, chances are you either handled it well or you haven’t learned how to deal with that situation—the solution is outside your understanding.

When you look at things that spark, “What if?”, do it with the intent to learn. Resist the temptation to blame or punish yourself. Instead, take knowledge your new perspective gives you and use it to become a better person.

What about the powerful side of, “What if?”

Take the question and spin it on its head!  Instead of asking, “what if I’d done..?” ask, “what if I do?”. Apply it to the future. And open yourself to wondrous possibilities!

What if I write that book?

What if I take that trip?

What if I apply for that job?

What if I climb that mountain?

What if I succeed?

Use “What if?” to ignite your imagination’s fire. Use it to discover your passion.  Use it to paint a brilliant future!

The choice is yours. You can punish yourself for the past or you become the hero of your future.

Kick The Quitter Out of Your Life!

Share

Kick The Quitter Out of Your Life!Isn’t it time you Kicked The Quitter Out of Your Life!

Awhile back I wrote a letter to the Quitter in my life. It was healing and had dramatic, immediate results in my life.

The idea is to write a letter to Mr. or Mrs. Quitter. Tell them why you’re done with them. Dig deep. Find powerful reasons why you’re through with the quitter inside.

I challenge you to write your own letter today!

To give you an idea what it looks like, here’s the letter I wrote.

****************************

Dear Mr. Quitter

I remember you. You showed up early in my life. You told me I wasn’t good enough, that I’d never amount to anything. Your voice changed from time to time, but the messages were the same.

“Why make friends?” You’d say, “You’re just going to move again anyway.”

“Why try that? You’ll never win!”

“You’re doing what? You Idiot! Do you really think you’ll succeed? Give it up now before you embarrass yourself.”

“Oh, this is hard. Let’s take the day off and watch TV or play video games.”

But then one day I decided to try skateboarding. I had you in a real snit! “You can’t do that! You’re too old! You’ll get hurt! People will laugh! Everyone things you’re an idiot for trying this!”

The problem for you was that I Wanted To Skateboard like I’d never wanted anything in my life. “Shut the %^&%^! UP!” I screamed. And I meant it.

You didn’t stop talking about skateboarding right away. It took months and months before you realized you weren’t going to change my mind. When I showed you that I could skate in a skatepark during the busiest time of day, or right next to a freeway with thousands of people driving by and love it…that’s when you stopped bothering me about skateboarding.

Then you moved to other things. But I’d beaten you once. I knew I could do it. That was the beginning of a new life for me.

I beat you when I published my first book. I beat you again when I published my second book. Every day you grow weaker and weaker in my life.

Well I have news for you. I know you’ve been holding on to finances as your last refuge, the place where you’ll keep me down. Here’s the rub.

I want financial success every bit as badly as I wanted to learn to skateboard. I think it’s fair to say I want financial success more than I wanted to learn to skateboard. You know I beat you on my skateboard. You know I beat you with my writing. You know I’m beating you in my financial life too! So you’d better pack your bags. Cuz I’m kicking your lousy %$#! Out of my life for good!

Leave Now and Never Come Back!

Roland

****************************

Once you’re done writing the letter go read it out loud in the mirror. Allow yourself to feel the emotions you expressed in your letter. Look yourself in the eye and let the inner quitter know you’re serious. This is it! You’re done with them for good!

After reading your letter, take immediate action on one of your dreams. This helps solidify your intention.

The next time you feel like quitting, just remember you kicked the quitter out! That quitter is gone for good! So tell it, “Thanks but I’m doing this anyway!”

Helmets Save Lives!

Helmets Save Lives!

On Friday (June 8th 2012) I was hit by a minivan on a freeway on-ramp. I was traveling at about 55mph. I was thrown from my bike, tumbled, and my helmet hit the asphalt about 4 times (impact marks are shown below). I survived with no head injuries Because I Wore My Helmet!

Motorcycle gear saves lives

Drivers, Watch For Motorcyclists!
Motorcyclists, Wear Your Gear!

I was wearing my Cortech armored jacket, carbon fiber reinforced gloves, the helmet, and special motorcycle shoes. Everything combined helped me survive.

Please Pass This On!

Are You a Quitter?

Share

Are you a quitter? There Are Three Ways of Handling Failure.

The first method of dealing with failure is to Give Up when you fail. Yeah, that’s right, QUIT!

This is by far the easiest path. Quitters never have to worry about learning. The can forget growing. When you quit you’re experiencing the only true form of failure. Quitting is also a great path if you’re stuck in a victim mentality.

Why?

Because the victim mentality allows you to place blame for the condition of your life on other things, on other people, on anything but you.

Here’s the rub.

If you’re going to blame other people or things for your failures then how can you ever take credit for your successes? At some point you must accept the fact that you choose what to think and do.

As far as I’m aware, science hasn’t figured out how to place someone else’s brain in your head. So those thoughts and actions came from you!

Guess where that puts the responsibility for your life?

Right on your shoulders!

With that understanding, is quitting really the best option? In the end you have to answer to yourself.

So perhaps this question is in order, “Am I a quitter or a fighter?”

The second method of approaching failure is to Keep Trying The Same Thing Over and Over and Over…without learning from your mistakes…

Many people seem stuck in this mode. It’s like grabbing an electric fence time and again while thinking, “It can’t shock me again because it shocked me last time…”

Guess what? Yes It Can!

And until you start changing your approach it will! The only reason this approach isn’t as bad as quitting is because you might figure out someday that you must do something different if you want different results!

So if you’re stuck in this approach…there’s hope.

Actually, there’s hope even if you’re stuck in the quitting cycle because you are human. That means you have the power of choice. You are 100% capable of change!

The third method to handle failure is to Keep Trying, Learn From Each Failure, Adjust Your Approach and Try Again! Repeat this process until you succeed. (And even then keep improving!)

This is the natural growth and learning process. It’s what children do! It’s what people who haven’t bought into small thinking do! It’s what people who learn their way out of small thinking do!

Think about it. When you were learning to walk, did you give up the first time you fell?

Did you sit on the ground, throw up your hands and say, “I guess I’m just not a walker.”

Of course not!

Why?

Because you really wanted to walk and you didn’t know quitting was an option!

So why would you give up on things today just because they get a little hard?

Right! There’s no good reason! So get back up, get out there, figure out what you’re doing wrong, and Change Your Approach!

There’s a word for this process…Success!

You Are The Master of Your Destiny!

An Entrepreneurial Spirit

Share

Do you know what you're feeding your subconscious mind?My four year old came to me the other day with five of her child-sized hangers in her hand and said, “Daddy, do you want to buy a hanger for a dollar?”

I’ve told many people this over the past week and gotten many different reactions. Everything from, “How cute” to “Did you say, ‘you can’t sell me something I already own!’”

Here’s my take.

First: She’s four years old. In her mind they are her hangers. She only had hangers that came from her closet and that we use for her cloths. So she was trying to sell me something that was hers.

Second: This was her first attempt at being an entrepreneur. She wanted a dollar—or more. Instead of asking, “can I have a dollar?” she found something of value and asked me if I wanted to buy it.

Third: She wanted something and took action!

As you’ve probably guessed, I felt her entrepreneurial venture deserved a reward. I bought one hanger. I paid her the dollar and watched her skip away happy with her success.

But, at four years old, where did she get the idea that selling something was a way to receive money?

Let me tell you our bedtime routine.

1st we say a family prayer.

2nd we read family scriptures.

3rd I read a few pages from The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind—T. Harv Eker—and we discuss any questions the children have about the concepts in it. That might seem odd to you. But consider that children are learning and developing every day. Isn’t it my duty as a father to help them develop successful financial skills and attitudes?

4th I read the children a chapter from whatever book we’re enjoying as a family.

Truthfully, my four year old daughter is usually asleep by the time we get to The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind. BUT she still hears it! That’s the power of the subconscious mind!

Whether you’re asleep, awake, distracted, or fully engaged in what you’re doing, Your Subconscious Mind is always listening!

Do you know what you’re feeding your subconscious? Do you know the messages you’re sending to the subconscious minds of those you love?

Many people like to say they have no control over the things they think…

GARBAGE!

You can control what you do with any thought that enters your mind! AND you can control what you feed your subconscious mind! Since your subconscious creates most of your conscious thoughts, controlling what you feed your mind shapes your thoughts.

So pay attention to the things you’re feeding your subconscious mind. Pay attention to the things you’re feeding the subconscious minds of those you love. If the messages you’re getting aren’t in alignment with your dreams or your beliefs…

Then Change Them!

After all…It’s your life. It’s Your Blueprint!

You Are The Master of Your Destiny!
