Whenever I coach someone who is having trouble either getting or staying in the shape they want, I begin by asking them, “Have you worked on your health and fitness mindset?”
The truth is: If your health and fitness mindset isn’t aligned with your health and fitness goals, you’ll continue struggling to get the long-term results you want. But who is telling you that?
Many people think “Mindset” means the conscious thoughts they have about the area of life in question. But it’s much more than that. Your “Mindset” means the conscious and your unconscious (or subconscious) thoughts you have about that area of life.
The Real Problem is That Your Unconscious Mind and Conscious Mind Can Disagree on What’s Important to You.
Why is that a problem?
Your Unconscious Mind is the storehouse for all your beliefs, emotional drivers, and habits. That’s one of the reasons why your unconscious mind is much more powerful than your conscious mind when it comes to the results you get from life. Essentially, when you’re not consciously controlling what you do Your Unconscious mind is in control.
What does that look like? Have you ever driven somewhere without realizing exactly what you did along the way? Have you practiced something until you can do it by reflex? When you walk, do you think about each individual movement involved?
All of those things are Your Unconscious mind driving.
So why can that be a bad thing?
It’s estimated that the average person has between 50,000 and 70,000 thoughts a day but is only consciously aware of 1,500 to 2,000 of them. That means you can only take conscious action on approximately 1,500 to 2,000 of your thoughts every day. All the thoughts you have, that are out of your awareness, are your unconscious mind at work. And if your unconscious mind has habits or beliefs that are counter to your health and fitness desires, guess who wins?
Right! Your Unconscious mind wins.
Unlike your conscious mind, that can choose new thoughts, Your Unconscious mind operates on old emotions and old patterns, regardless of whether they really work! That’s why it’s critical that you address the beliefs, patterns, and emotions stored in your unconscious mind if you do truly want long-term success with your health and fitness now.
That’s why addressing both Your Unconscious and Conscious is massively important when redesigning your health and fitness mindset.
Sure, you can consciously override your unconscious mind. But only temporarily. As soon as you relax your efforts Your Unconscious is back in the driver’s seat.
How can you know whether your unconscious supports your health and fitness goals or not?
Simply look at the current results you’re getting in your health and fitness. If your results are different than what you want, then Your Unconscious Mind is unsupportive of what your trying to accomplish.
