How Does Your Mind Body Connection Matter?
Many people are really disconnected with what’s going on with their body, especially when going to the gym. The problem with that is, if you’re unaware of what’s going on with your body, how can you know what your body is trying to tell you?
Your Body Speaks to You
Your body is trying to give you messages all the time; about what it needs, what you can do for it, how it can serve you, and how you can better serve it.
When it comes to understanding the mind-body connection, one of the best ways you can start developing that is through daily meditation.

To meditate: Pick a comfortable spot. Sit down and relax. Close your eyes and begin paying attention to your breath. Feel it as you breathe in deeply. Feel tension leave your body as you exhale slowly. Keep repeating this process. As you’re relaxing you can use a mantra. One of my favorites is RAM, pronounced “rum”. As you inhale, think or say, “RAM” and as you exhale, think or say, “RAM”. Keep doing this as you relax more and more.
As you are doing this, feel your energy and attention go to your feet. Notice your feet. Feel them. Feel the pulse in your feet. Feel your socks, if you’re wearing them. Feel your shoes, if you’re wearing them. Feel the floor under your feet. Notice all the sensations around your feet.
Then shift your attention up to your calves and shins. Allow yourself to notice everything going on in and with that area of your body. Feel the clothing or the air or the furniture, against your skin. Notice, are they warm or are they cool? Are they feeling relaxed? Are they feeling energized? Allow yourself to notice these things. Really let the energy come into your awareness.
Do this with your whole body. Shift your attention up into your quads and hamstrings, then into your glutes, and into your lower back. Spend a few seconds at each area allowing yourself to really feel and connect with that part of your body. Then move to your abdomen, your chest, your back, your arms, your hands, and finally up into your face and head. Go through the whole process every time you meditate, noticing and connecting with every part or your body.
As you do this over a couple of weeks, you’ll begin to start to develop an awareness of what’s really going on in your body. Developing your body awareness through meditation will allow the awareness to carry into your day-to-day life.
While sitting, watching a video or reading this or just relaxing, you can place your energy on your hand. You might feel your hand tingling. You can notice your pulse beating in your hand. You might notice your hand growing warmer. You can just notice these things.

You can also practice while you’re at the gym by placing your attention on the muscle group your working. If you’re doing a curl, you can notice the tension on your biceps. Really feel your biceps contracting. Focus your attention on making your biceps contract as hard as you can at the top of the movement. Allow yourself to put your mind in the muscle. The more you do this, the more you can really control where you’re expending your energy the most.
Regardless of your sport or your choice of exercise, you can learn to place your attention on the group of muscles that are required to properly execute movements for optimal results.
As you learn to do this more and more, you’ll begin to develop the ability to know what your body is telling you it needs. Your body will communicate if it needs more rest and recovery, if it needs more nutrition, even if it wants you to exercise harder than you have been. You’ll learn how to know what your body is telling you and what it needs.
Your mind controls everything about your body and your life. If you’re failing to get the results that you want, it’s because there’s something in your thinking that needs to be fine-tuned.
