Does Your Mind-Body Connection Matter?

Share

How Does Your Mind Body Connection Matter?

Many people are really disconnected with what’s going on with their body, especially when going to the gym. The problem with that is, if you’re unaware of what’s going on with your body, how can you know what your body is trying to tell you?

Your Body Speaks to You

Your body is trying to give you messages all the time; about what it needs, what you can do for it, how it can serve you, and how you can better serve it.

When it comes to understanding the mind-body connection, one of the best ways you can start developing that is through daily meditation.

The power of meditation

To meditate: Pick a comfortable spot. Sit down and relax. Close your eyes and begin paying attention to your breath. Feel it as you breathe in deeply. Feel tension leave your body as you exhale slowly. Keep repeating this process. As you’re relaxing you can use a mantra. One of my favorites is RAM, pronounced “rum”.  As you inhale, think or say, “RAM” and as you exhale, think or say, “RAM”. Keep doing this as you relax more and more.

As you are doing this, feel your energy and attention go to your feet. Notice your feet. Feel them. Feel the pulse in your feet. Feel your socks, if you’re wearing them. Feel your shoes, if you’re wearing them. Feel the floor under your feet. Notice all the sensations around your feet.

Then shift your attention up to your calves and shins. Allow yourself to notice everything going on in and with that area of your body. Feel the clothing or the air or the furniture, against your skin. Notice, are they warm or are they cool? Are they feeling relaxed? Are they feeling energized? Allow yourself to notice these things. Really let the energy come into your awareness.

Do this with your whole body. Shift your attention up into your quads and hamstrings, then into your glutes, and into your lower back. Spend a few seconds at each area allowing yourself to really feel and connect with that part of your body. Then move to your abdomen, your chest, your back, your arms, your hands, and finally up into your face and head. Go through the whole process every time you meditate, noticing and connecting with every part or your body.

As you do this over a couple of weeks, you’ll begin to start to develop an awareness of what’s really going on in your body. Developing your body awareness through meditation will allow the awareness to carry into your day-to-day life.

While sitting, watching a video or reading this or just relaxing, you can place your energy on your hand. You might feel your hand tingling. You can notice your pulse beating in your hand. You might notice your hand growing warmer. You can just notice these things.

Focus your attention on the muscle being worked

You can also practice while you’re at the gym by placing your attention on the muscle group your working. If you’re doing a curl, you can notice the tension on your biceps. Really feel your biceps contracting. Focus your attention on making your biceps contract as hard as you can at the top of the movement. Allow yourself to put your mind in the muscle. The more you do this, the more you can really control where you’re expending your energy the most.

Regardless of your sport or your choice of exercise, you can learn to place your attention on the group of muscles that are required to properly execute movements for optimal results.

As you learn to do this more and more, you’ll begin to develop the ability to know what your body is telling you it needs. Your body will communicate if it needs more rest and recovery, if it needs more nutrition, even if it wants you to exercise harder than you have been. You’ll learn how to know what your body is telling you and what it needs.

Your mind controls everything about your body and your life. If you’re failing to get the results that you want, it’s because there’s something in your thinking that needs to be fine-tuned.

How Your Unconscious Mind Controls Your Health and Fitness

Share

Do You Know How Your Unconscious Mind Shapes Your Health and Fitness?

Your unconscious mind is massively important when it comes to what’s going on in your life, especially what’s going on when it comes to your health and fitness. Your unconscious mind is quite literally the storehouse for all the beliefs you’ve ever created, adopted, inherited, etc. throughout your life.

If any of those beliefs fail to serve you, then you’re going to struggle in that area of life. If any of those beliefs are disempowering about your health and fitness, then your results will match your beliefs more than they will ever match your desires.

What do you do about that? How do you get your results to start matching your desires?

You Want Your Results to Match Your Desires? Change Your Beliefs!

The Way You Get Your Results to Start Matching Your Desires is to Change Your Unconscious Beliefs

Your beliefs control your actions. They control your results. Your beliefs control what you see, what you hear, what you think. Two people can walk away from the same situation with vastly different interpretations (or personal meanings about the event). This happens all the time.

For example. I was watching a show once where they were demonstrating how the way a question is phrased influences the belief of the person responding to the question. They set it up by having a car run a stop sign and T-bone another car. They had a police officer there asking the witnesses what they saw happen. The officer asked half of the people, “How fast was the car was going when it slammed into the other car?” The other half of the witnesses were asked, “What speed was the car going when it hit the parked car?”

The people who were asked how fast the car was going when it slammed into the other car, gave answers that were 10 to 15 mph higher than the other group because the words “Fast” and “Slammed” influenced their unconscious minds to believe the car was traveling at a higher rate of speed. While the question, “What speed was the car traveling when it hit the parked car?” was more neutral and let them more fairly judge what speed the car was traveling.

That’s the same type of thing you’ll get when your beliefs match up with what your desires are, you’ll get results that match what you want because you’ll believe it’s possible and your unconscious mind will work to make your beliefs match your reality. When your beliefs are different than your desires, then your results are going to be different than what you want.

In the book, “The Ten Seeds of Greatness.” By Denis Waitley, there is a section that talks about the power of the mind. They hypnotized some very strong men—weightlifters, powerlifters, etc.—and they gave them the suggestion that a book, that was lying on the floor, weighed 5lbs more than the maximum each man could lift. When the men were brought out of hypnosis, they tried and tried to lift the book but couldn’t pick it up. They also measured the muscle contractions and found that the opposing muscle groups were resisting the attempts to lift the book with about 5lbs more force than the muscles being used to try to lift the book.

That’s an example of the unconscious mind making a belief reality.

So, if your unconscious mind believes that you are healthy and fit, then your unconscious mind will help you create the long term results necessary to experience health and fitness in your life!

When your unconscious minds believes that you are healthy and fit, it will work to make it reality!

If your unconscious mind believes otherwise…that’s when the other results come in. And if you wonder what your unconscious mind currently believes, just look at the results you’re getting. Are you becoming healthier and more fit every day or are you either stagnate or worse, sliding the other way?

If you’re currently getting results that are less than what you want with your health and fitness, it’s because some belief in your unconscious mind is counter to what you’re working to accomplish.

How do You Change The Beliefs That are Failing to Serve You?

You can start by taking about 10 minutes before you go to sleep at night and visualize yourself with the health and fitness that you want. Visualize it as if it is already true. Allow yourself to feel how wonderful it feels to have that level of health and fitness in your life. Allow yourself to play out a scene where you play out all of the wonderful things that come from having that degree of health and fitness.

As you do this more and more, your unconscious mind will start to believe that this is what’s going on and it will start doing everything in its considerable power to bring those results to pass.

Starting today, figure out where you want to be and as you’re drifting off to sleep, paint that perfect picture, that vision in your mind, as you’re drifting off, of what it’s like to have the health, the fitness, the results that you want and to have them now. Start doing this, every night as you’re drifting off to sleep. Make sure you’re thinking in totally positive terms, as you’re feeling it, experiencing it, playing it out in your mind as if it is already true now.

Do this for 30 days and watch what happens!

How to Push Yourself Harder When Working Out

Share

How to Push Yourself Harder While Working Out

I want to share a secret with you that will help you get more out of yourself when you’re working out or exercising.

You know what it’s like when you’re going along and you hit the wall, where you feel like you can’t do anymore? Maybe you feel like your pump is too much to push out one more rep or you’re just too tired to push yourself through and go that extra mile while you’re hiking or jogging?

You know what it's like when you're going along and you hit that wall?

That’s a tough place to be. You know the results you want are on the other side of the discomfort or pain that you’re feeling and at the same time it can be very hard to push through pain or discomfort, even when you know what you want is on the other side.

When or if you find yourself wanting to quit and you know you must continue to get the results you want, here’s a secret you can use starting today to push yourself harder and get even more from your workouts and exercise.

Imagine That You Float Out of Your Body and Up Above Yourself, So You Are Watching Yourself do the Exercise.

What’s that like and why does it work?

Allowing your awareness to float out of your body and up above yourself in the air, while you watch yourself do those last couple of reps or push through that last mile, is called dissociation. It allows you to get away from the physical discomforts that are going on in your body. By getting away from those discomforts, you’ll find that you can push yourself harder than you thought you could push yourself. And as you know, being able to push yourself harder is what allows you to get the growth you want.

Float your awareness out of your body

If all you ever do is go to where it’s uncomfortable or where it starts to be uncomfortable and then stop, then you’re cheating yourself out of maximal growth—that’s on the other side—because you’ve trained yourself to stop when it gets tough. Stopping when it gets tough is a great path to mediocrity! You’re better than that!

You’ve Got to Push Through the Discomfort!

You’ve got to push through the pain!

You’ve got to get yourself to a point where you’re growing beyond what you used to hold yourself accountable for or capable of!

So next time you’re exercising or working out and you find yourself in a situation where you’re just not sure whether you can push out that next rep or push yourself through to go the extra distance that you know you really want to go, try that trick! Allow your awareness to float out of your body, up above yourself, and look down and imagine that you’re watching yourself do the exercise or do the reps.

Give this a shot and let me know how well it works for you.

Are You Getting What You Want from Your Health and Fitness Regimen?

Share

Are You As Healthy and Fit as You Want to Be?

Are you getting what you want from your health and fitness regimen?  Are your efforts paying off? Because if you’re not getting what you want… There are a couple of reasons why that happens.

There might be something you need to learn. Sometimes we can go out and we can be doing everything that we think we need to do—as far as exercising or eating right or getting the right time of day to exercise and the right nutrition. But we are working from old, outdated, or incorrect information.

Learn How To Have Lasting Success With Your Health and Fitness

For example: I used to think I had to eat every two hours, to keep my metabolism up. It wasn’t until about a year and a half ago that I learned that eating every two hours actually increases our bodies insulin spike and reduces hormones—like Testosterone and the HGH in my body—and so it actually works against what I’m trying to accomplish.

Some people have to eat a lot to maintain massive muscularity, for the average person this isn't necessary and can work against you.

Now, some guys like, Brian Shaw, Eddie Hall, Hafþór Björnsson… Those guys, they have to eat A Lot! We’re talking 12,000+ calories a day! They have to eat all the time. And they’re figuring out ways to work around what constant eating does to our body’s hormones. But for the average person, for the guy or girl who just wants to go to the gym, or go ride their mountain bike, or their street bike, or go hiking, or whatever the form of exercise is, eating every two hours can actually work against you.

The only reason I’m bringing that up is because that’s an example of a learning. I had to learn that for me, the best way to eat is to practice intermittent fasting. Winning The Mental Game of Fitness isn’t about preaching what type of diet you should do or how you should eat or how you should exercise…

Maybe there's something you need to learn so you can create lasting success in your health and fitness!

The point is, if there’s something that isn’t working quite right then maybe there’s something you need to learn. And once you learn what you need to learn, then you can move on because you’ll have surpassed that obstacle. You’ll Plow Through It! Go Over It! Go Around It! Whatever. You’ve got the information. You’ve got the knowledge now that will help you get better results.

Is What You’re Doing Working?

There might be something you need to unlearn. That’s another thing that can happen that keeps people from getting the results that they want. If you’re failing to get the results that you want… Maybe you learned something in the past, that made sense when you learned it but now, it ain’t workin. Maybe it never worked and you just didn’t know it because it’s what you knew and you were running with it. So, sometimes we have to unlearn things that weren’t working in the past or that aren’t working now… We need to unlearn them! So that we can then start getting the results that we want.

Perhaps you need to change your methods, change your approach completely. Sometimes you’ve got to throw it all out and start over. You know what? That’s okay! If that happens, you can do it! You just have to figure out, “Hey this ain’t workin!” “Whatever I’m doing is failing to get me the results I want. So maybe I need to try a completely different approach.”

I used to have a mindset, a belief, that I had to go to the gym for 2 or 3 hours at a time, that I had to go 6 days a week, that I had to go all out and be as big and as massive as I could possibly be. That worked great for me at the time. There came a point in my early 30’s when I got up to around 225lbs. I wasn’t really that lean but I was really strong and I was happy with it…

And then life kind of got in the way. And I kept eating the same amount that I’d been eating… But I quit going to the gym. And guess what? The next thing I knew I was somewhere around 260lbs. My shoulders had gone in. My stomach had gone out. I was like a beach-ball on legs!

On the way up to around 260 lbs

And I felt it was gross, that I looked and physically felt gross. Now I’m talking about me. Everyone is different and everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions about their own bodies. Some people are perfectly happy and content looking that way. But I, personally, was really unhappy with that. And I got it turned around. I created a lifestyle of health and fitness that has served me well for going on 15 years now.

Getting Your Mind Right

This is about getting your mind right so you can make sure that what you want is truly for you instead of something that you adopted from somebody else, something you wanted for somebody else.

Originally, I went to bodyweight exercises and that worked great. I was able to use bodyweight exercises to shed all that unwanted fat, and all that extra weight, and get myself in really good shape again. I lost somewhere around 80 lbs. As you can understand I was usually the person behind the camera because of how I felt about my body. But I have a few photos of how I looked while I was in the process of putting on all that weight. I’ll add some of those and put in a picture of what I looked like when I initially lost that 80lbs…

6 months after adopting a health and fitness lifestyle

And I’ve kept it off, almost all of the weight off since then. I’ve been up and down a little bit but I’ve never come anywhere even close to that old weight because I’ve always had the health and fitness mindset, the health and fitness lifestyle in mind.

And let’s be real, sometimes on this path, we fail. Sometimes you start doing something and you just aren’t getting the results you want. And, you find yourself thinking, “WOW, that really sucks.” If that happens, then say, “Okay, it’s time to reset, re-calibrate, and move on!”

Pay Attention to Your Results

Look at what’s working and learn from failure. Learn how to allow yourself the privilege of failing. Because if you aren’t failing, you aren’t growing.

So try stuff. And when something is working, Great! Run with it. If something isn’t working, then adjust, recalibrate, move on. Try something different. There’s a wealth of information out there about exercises and diet and what time of day is best to exercise, and everything you need to know about that part. I’m telling you, you’ve got to learn how to fail! Because if you aren’t trying new things, then how can you learn, how can you grow?

You also need to expand your comfort zone. An example of what I’m talking about, is when I had a comfort zone that was: to work out you go to the gym—it has to be a gym—and you go for 2 to 3 hours a time and it’s gotta be 5 or 6 days a week…

I had such rigid requirements around what had to happen for me to “Work Out” that when something got in the way and things weren’t working how I wanted, then I felt like everything was just going to crap. And there were times, because I had a much weaker mindset back then, that I would just give up.

If I couldn’t work out the way that I thought I should work out, I would just give up. Well, that makes no sense! If something goes wrong, if you can’t work out the way you think you should work out, great! Do something different until you can get back to the way you want to do it.

Learn to Be Adaptable

Be adaptable. Be Fluid. Allow yourself to be like Bruce Lee says, “Be water, my friend.” Just flow with it. And allow yourself the freedom to have a health and a fitness lifestyle! So that you can start getting long term, lasting results.

That could be bodyweight exercises. That could be hard core strength training. That could be powerlifting. That could be CrossFit. That could be bodybuilding. Whatever it is for you is perfect for you. Just make sure that your mindset supports it so you can get the long-term results that you want! These things build over time. It’s long-term, incremental results, compounded that give you the benefits you’re looking for.

Be Gentle on Yourself in The Beginning

No one goes into the gym day 1, works out, and then says, “Hey I worked out for five hours! I’m so strong. Now I’m ready to go!” It doesn’t happen. You go to the gym and you work out for 5 hours when you haven’t been working out… You’re going to be so sore you can’t even move!

Funny Story. When I was in high school, I had a time when I went and I worked out with this guy and we did calves. And I hadn’t been doing calves the way that I should. And he just blitzed it! And I kept up with him the whole time. Then the next day, I woke up and I couldn’t straighten my legs. I was 6 inches shorter! And for about 2 weeks, I couldn’t straighten my legs at all. And when I was walking, I remember thinking, “Oh my gosh! This hurts so much!”

I had done so much damage, because I let my ego get in the way of what would have been the smart way to work out. So, if you’re new to working out and you’re working on getting the fitness lifestyle going, then be gentle on yourself while you build up the resistance. And in time you’ll be able to do more, and more, and more. You’ve just need to be gentle at the beginning and allow yourself the room to actually grow into it. You’ll be far more productive in the long run.

Work out. That's Awesome! Make sure you add movement to your day. Make exercise a priority!

To start creating a Health and Fitness Lifestyle, You Can Start Thinking:

  • “How can I expand my comfort zone?”
  • “How can I allow myself to look for ways to be healthy?”
  • “How can I add movement to my day?”
  • “How can I look for and find ways to increase what I consider to be exercise?”

Because in the end, it’s all about movement. It’s all about how much you’re using your body in an intelligent way.

You can be very healthy, very fit, without ever actually going into a gym.

You can work out at your house. You can work out in nature. A lot of people, it’s really popular right now for people to go to parks and work out on jungle gyms and stuff. That’s Awesome! Do it wherever you need to do it.

If you think that you don’t have time to workout… I’ll argue that all day long with you.

How many people sit down, in front of a tv show, or in front of Netflix, or Hulu, or YouTube, or Facebook live videos, or whatever it is that they’re watching. How many times do people sit down and binge-watch? Or just watch whatever instead of doing something productive?

It’s easy to pause something for 10 minutes. Pause your show for 10 minutes. Do a set of jumping jacks. Come back and watch the show. Pause the show. Do some pushups. Come back and watch the show. Give yourself the reward of watching the show After You Work Out! Find ways to make working out fun.

It’s all about creating the lifestyle of health and fitness because that’s where you are going to get the lasting results that you’re looking for!
