Does Your Mind-Body Connection Matter?

Share

How Does Your Mind Body Connection Matter?

Many people are really disconnected with what’s going on with their body, especially when going to the gym. The problem with that is, if you’re unaware of what’s going on with your body, how can you know what your body is trying to tell you?

Your Body Speaks to You

Your body is trying to give you messages all the time; about what it needs, what you can do for it, how it can serve you, and how you can better serve it.

When it comes to understanding the mind-body connection, one of the best ways you can start developing that is through daily meditation.

The power of meditation

To meditate: Pick a comfortable spot. Sit down and relax. Close your eyes and begin paying attention to your breath. Feel it as you breathe in deeply. Feel tension leave your body as you exhale slowly. Keep repeating this process. As you’re relaxing you can use a mantra. One of my favorites is RAM, pronounced “rum”.  As you inhale, think or say, “RAM” and as you exhale, think or say, “RAM”. Keep doing this as you relax more and more.

As you are doing this, feel your energy and attention go to your feet. Notice your feet. Feel them. Feel the pulse in your feet. Feel your socks, if you’re wearing them. Feel your shoes, if you’re wearing them. Feel the floor under your feet. Notice all the sensations around your feet.

Then shift your attention up to your calves and shins. Allow yourself to notice everything going on in and with that area of your body. Feel the clothing or the air or the furniture, against your skin. Notice, are they warm or are they cool? Are they feeling relaxed? Are they feeling energized? Allow yourself to notice these things. Really let the energy come into your awareness.

Do this with your whole body. Shift your attention up into your quads and hamstrings, then into your glutes, and into your lower back. Spend a few seconds at each area allowing yourself to really feel and connect with that part of your body. Then move to your abdomen, your chest, your back, your arms, your hands, and finally up into your face and head. Go through the whole process every time you meditate, noticing and connecting with every part or your body.

As you do this over a couple of weeks, you’ll begin to start to develop an awareness of what’s really going on in your body. Developing your body awareness through meditation will allow the awareness to carry into your day-to-day life.

While sitting, watching a video or reading this or just relaxing, you can place your energy on your hand. You might feel your hand tingling. You can notice your pulse beating in your hand. You might notice your hand growing warmer. You can just notice these things.

Focus your attention on the muscle being worked

You can also practice while you’re at the gym by placing your attention on the muscle group your working. If you’re doing a curl, you can notice the tension on your biceps. Really feel your biceps contracting. Focus your attention on making your biceps contract as hard as you can at the top of the movement. Allow yourself to put your mind in the muscle. The more you do this, the more you can really control where you’re expending your energy the most.

Regardless of your sport or your choice of exercise, you can learn to place your attention on the group of muscles that are required to properly execute movements for optimal results.

As you learn to do this more and more, you’ll begin to develop the ability to know what your body is telling you it needs. Your body will communicate if it needs more rest and recovery, if it needs more nutrition, even if it wants you to exercise harder than you have been. You’ll learn how to know what your body is telling you and what it needs.

Your mind controls everything about your body and your life. If you’re failing to get the results that you want, it’s because there’s something in your thinking that needs to be fine-tuned.

I Don’t Have Time to Work Out!

Share

Have You Ever Thought You Don’t Have Enough Time to Work Out?

I used to too! There were points in my life when I was so busy that I thought there was no way I could ever work out. Then I changed my thinking and now finding time to exercise is easy!

Do you ever feel like you have no time to exercise?

Do you ever find yourself feeling like you have no time to exercise? That there’s too much to be done, you’ve got deadlines, things you’ve got to get done, people expecting things done at certain times? And you don’t know how you can get everything done in your time-frame. Let alone take a few minutes here and there to take care of yourself.

There’s a huge problem with that thinking!

You’ve got to take care of yourself. And you’ve got to start taking care of yourself now because when you stop taking care of yourself physically, your body begins falling apart. If you’re failing to take care of your body, you’re cheating yourself out of both a high quality of life and the energy to do the things you want and need to do.

There is a direct correlation between how well you take care of yourself and how much energy you have to be a high achiever, to be productive, to accomplish the things you want to accomplish, and to do all the things you want to do. Because of that, the only way to enjoy a high quality of life and high energy levels is to take care of your body.

There's a direct correlation between how well you take care of yourself and how much energy you have

If you ever find yourself thinking that there’s just not enough time to work out, then remember that working out doesn’t have to be going to the gym for 60 or 90 minutes. Working out doesn’t have to be done during a set time frame.

If you’re at a place in your life or with your career, where it’s really hard to find that time. Then I recommend finding ways to steal little blocks of time throughout the day where you can get some exercise in. You can do a quick set of push-ups, a set of crunches, even a set of body weight squats. If you have the will you will find a way. I used to do pull-ups on the bar between the stalls in the public restroom where I worked. Was that ideal? No! But I was determined and it was much better than doing nothing. Then I bought my own pull-up stand and put it in my office where I could do pull-ups when I had 5 to 10 minutes to spare, usually 4 times a day.

The Real Question is, “How Much Do You Want to Be Healthy?”

Think about it. How much do you want to be fit? How badly do you want the high quality of life that only comes from taking care of yourself physically, from treating your body respectfully? Your body was designed to be in motion. The human body was never designed to be sedentary. That’s how bodies start falling apart.

What are you doing about it?

If you feel like you haven’t the time to work out, then I challenge you to find 5 minutes, 3 or 4 times a day, where you can do something quick and intense. This will help you start having the health and fitness that you deserve in your life. It will allow you to start having the high quality of life that you certainly deserve!

The Power of Gratitude

Share

Do You Know The Power of Gratitude?Do you know The Power of Gratitude?

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. One day a year set aside to fully express Gratitude for Life’s Blessings.

Gratitude is a wonderful gift that we should practice every day. Gratitude not only dissolves disempowering emotions like depression, anger, frustration, & anxiety—to name a few, it opens you to receive more blessings because it places your focus on what you have instead of what you lack.

Sadly, many people think they must receive something to feel thankful.

But the truth is, no matter where you are in life, you can always feel grateful. There’s always something to feel gratitude for.

Even if it’s something as simple as:

“I’m thankful I have warm blankets.”

“I’m grateful for the gift of another day to become a better person.”

“I’m grateful for the air I breathe.”

“I’m thankful for my body.”

“I’m grateful for a hot meal.”

In reality, Everything You Need to Experience Love, Joy, and Fulfillment is already within you.

Once you realize that, you’ll begin to feel grateful for the gift of life. Every breath, every thought, every beat of your heart are reasons to celebrate. These mean you’re alive, empowered to create your future, to make a difference should you choose.

So tap into gratitude. Think of five things right now you’re grateful for. But instead of stopping there, do your best to make this a daily practice. You’ll be amazed at the difference living in gratitude creates in your life.

Sneak Peek at “Letters on Life”

Letters on Life

I’m currently working on my new Book, Letters on Life.

Update! The book title changed.

It’s now, The Pi of Life: Essential Truths for Creating Happiness, Wholeness, & Success.

Get a signed copy here: http://www.ThePiofLife.com/

If you’d like the Kindle version, click here!

Here’s an excerpt that I want to share with you.

“I feel striving is a poor choice of words for my new dream. I was growing. I am growing. I am moving forward toward a new tomorrow and toward my destination. But truly my destination is merely the next step toward my next step. There is no destination, it is an illusion designed to justify the growth necessary to reach the next beginning. Each destination is my next telephone pole and can be celebrated as a beautiful accomplishment just as each step and each breath can be celebrated as a destination and a beginning at the same time.”

What is The Cost of A Smile?

Share

Does a Smile Cost Anything?

Do you smile easily? Or, do you walk around with a serious expression, maybe even a frown?

What impact do you think your facial expression has on others?

Take that a step further. Ask yourself, “What impact do my facial expressions have on me?”

Check Yourself Right Now. Are You Smiling?

If so, great! How do you feel?

If not, why not? And again, how do you feel?

Try something for me. Stop right now. Get up and go stand in front of a mirror. Put a big, genuine smile on your face. Now smile at yourself in the mirror for 30 to 60 seconds. Make eye contact with yourself. Feel happy and confident. After all, you do like yourself.

Yeah, yeah, people might think you’re weird.

SO WHAT!

I know an author isn’t supposed to tell people to stop reading. But this is important. Besides, I know you’ll come back and finish.

So, go now! Smile at yourself in the mirror for 30 to 60 seconds and then come back and tell me how you feel.

Deal?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
.
Did I wait long enough?

Good.

How do you feel now?

Great! I knew you’d feel better. Even if you felt good or great to start, it’s impossible to smile at yourself with a genuine, warm smile and not feel better.

Why is that?

It’s because your brain is hardwired to react positively to a smile. A smile is an open, friendly, accepting gesture. It sends a message of welcome and love. That makes smiles infectious! I think you’ll agree with me, of all the diseases in this world I can’t think of one I’d rather have than chronic Smileyitis.

Now Imagine What Your Smile Does for The People You Interact With Every Day…

I know when I smile, which is all the time, I see many happy, friendly people smiling back at me. My smile feeds their smile and their smile feeds my smile. It’s a wonderful loop of positive reinforcement!

In fact, total strangers approach me all the time. They smile, I smile, and we have pleasant conversations. It’s wonderful.

But it wasn’t always that way. I used to walk around with a grim set to my mouth. I frowned a lot and didn’t realize it. In effect I wore a huge, “Leave me alone!” sign. And you know what, even though that wasn’t what I thought I wanted, it worked.

People avoided me like the plague.

That’s not what I wanted. But that’s reality. When you walk around with a dark cloud hanging over you, others see it. And they feel it. When you choose to be miserable, you impact those around you. Even if you try to keep it to yourself, they will sense it and it will affect them.

Is that what you want?

Or…do you want to lift the spirits of the people you meet every day?

With that in mind, ask yourself, “What is the cost of a smile?”

My answer is this: A smile costs nothing. It’s an investment in the beauty of life!
